Overview

📍Finding Your Way

Address: Kiefholzstr. 350, 12435 Berlin

🌿 The Secret Path

The most beautiful way. From Plänterwald S-Bahn, head towards Karpfenteich (carp pond). Follow the path along the canal, then cross under the train tracks through the tunnel — the garden gate is right there. Green, quiet, magical.

🚶 Via Kiefholzstraße

From Kiefholzstr. 350, the garden entrance is directly accessible from the street. Easier when carrying heavy things or arriving by car.

Nearest station: S-Bhf Plänterwald (S8, S9, S45, S46, S47, S85)

  1. Exit S-Bhf Plänterwald towards Karpfenteich.
  2. Walk along the canal path for about 5–7 minutes.
  3. Cross under the train tracks — the garden entrance is right after.

Tip: Trains run every 10–20 min. Use the VBB app or Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe website for live schedules. From Ostkreuz it's just 2 stops.

Where: Street parking on Kiefholzstraße. Usually free and fairly easy to find a spot, especially on weekends.

🔑Getting In (and staying secure)

  • Spare key: Hidden in [LOCATION] — just ask if you can't find it.

💧Water

Water here is a seasonal luxury — here's the deal:

  • Water ON: Usually mid/late April, weather permitting. The Vorstand will announce it.
  • Water OFF: Usually mid/late October. All outdoor pipes get drained for winter.
  • Main valve: In [LOCATION — e.g., under the sink / shed]. Turn clockwise to shut off.
  • Garden tap: [Location]. Disconnect hoses before winter — frozen pipes are no fun.
❄️
Before the first frost: Empty the 250L rainwater collection basket, disconnect all hoses, and never leave water in outdoor pipes when it freezes!

🔥The Stove

Nothing beats a real fire on a chilly evening. Here's how to get it going:

  1. Open the air vent fully (the lever at the front/bottom).
  2. Pop some fire starters or kindling in the center.
  3. Light it up! Leave the door cracked open for 2–3 min to get the draft going.
  4. Once it's burning nicely, add bigger pieces of wood.
  5. Close the door and adjust the air vent to your comfort level.
💡
Good to know: No spirit or petrol — ever. And keep the door closed once it's burning.

Fuel: Use only dry wood from [LOCATION]. No treated wood, no trash please.

🍳Swapping the Gas Bottle

The kitchen stove runs on propane. Swapping the bottle is easier than it sounds:

  1. Close the valve on the current bottle (clockwise, until snug).
  2. Unscrew the regulator — no tools, just hand-tight.
  3. Swap the empty bottle out. Set it aside.
  4. Place a fresh one from [STORAGE LOCATION].
  5. Screw the regulator back on, hand-tight.
  6. Open the valve slowly. Sniff around — if you smell gas, tighten a bit more.
  7. Test by lighting one burner for a moment.
⚠️
If you smell gas: Close the valve, open windows, don't light anything. Spare bottles are in [LOCATION].

Electricity & Fuses

The fuse box is [LOCATION — e.g., near the entrance / in the hallway].

  • Fuse 1: [Circuit — e.g., Lights]
  • Fuse 2: [Circuit — e.g., Outlets]
  • Fuse 3: [Circuit — e.g., Kitchen]

Power gone? Check the fuse box. A lever down? Push it back up. Trips again right away? Unplug the last thing you connected and retry.

Please don't: Never swap a fuse for a stronger one. If it keeps tripping, call the owner.

🏡Kleingartenanlage Rules

  • Quiet times: 1–3 PM (lunch) and 10 PM–7 AM (night). Just keep it cozy enough that the neighbors can't hear you.
  • No open fires. This includes fire bowls — not allowed per Kleingarten rules. Only use the grill and check for summer fire bans.
  • Extra guests? Give the owner a heads-up first.
  • Paths: Keep the shared walkways clear — no jungle takeover.
  • Neighbors: A friendly "Hallo!" goes a really long way here.
  • Pets: Only with prior arrangement.
📜
Fun fact: Allotment gardens are protected by federal law (Bundeskleingartengesetz). The gist: garden for joy, not for living here full-time.
